May 1, 2019 David Hallinan Company, Customers, Storage API SignNow and Egnyte: A Case Study in the Benefits of Unified API Integration Here at Kloudless, we often find that companies benefit from our Unified APIs’ ability to provide integration for many different services at once. By coding once and integrating with multiple APIs, developers can skip the tedious process of combing through documentation, testing, and having to manually update their code so it plays well with other APIs in the future. This last reason can be especially important to a company when they’re looking to integrate their product with a single service that only Kloudless provides connectivity to. SignNow is a recent customer who found great success by leveraging Kloudless for their service’s connectivity. Let’s take a look at how the whole thing came together: SignNow is an award-winning e-signature solution known for its easy-to-use and comprehensive toolkit. SignNow allows users to e-sign documents in seconds, create complex e-signature workflows with multiple recipients and securely protect documents from unauthorized access, all while using any desktop or mobile device. The Tutor Perini Corporation, a leading group of civil, building and specialty construction companies with over 120 years of experience, decided to integrate SignNow’s e-signature workflows into Egnyte’s file sharing and synchronization platform. Egnyte’s system allows managers to work with files regardless of their location – Egnyte calls this a ‘hybrid approach’ and provides equal access to both hard drive and cloud folders. The integration would enable construction managers to e-sign documents, request signatures on any device and track the status of these documents while at a job site. The Problem Integrating SignNow with a storage service can be a complicated process due to the vast level of customizable functionality that Egnyte offers. At the time, SignNow needed a reliable way of connecting to Egnyte before potential customers went looking for alternatives. SignNow needed to find a solution that provided an all-in-one pack integration with Egnyte, DropBox, Google Drive, and Box. Needless to say, finding an ideal match in a speedy timeframe was proving difficult. Up to this point, SignNow had been building connections with outside API services as one-offs; writing code to connect to their specific service, testing connections, and ensuring that integrations still worked after changes on the API’s side were made. Aside from the time needed to become familiar with the minute details of these connectors, a major problem persisted: whenever an API would make changes to its responses or endpoints, SignNow developers had to spend considerable time re-examining docs and refactoring code to accommodate that APIs’ changes. SignNow didn’t want to spend developer time for the upkeep of a single integration, but still needed to add the Egnyte connector that their customers were requesting. On top of that, SignNow had been using automated workflows to manage some connections of their integration. The pressing need to establish an all-in-one integrations pack for their sophisticated API meant little time for a single client. The Solution In their pursuit of a solution to their Egnyte integrations problem, SignNow came across Kloudless and our Unified Storage API. Kloudless solved many of SignNow’s problems right off the bat: First, they already supported Egnyte in their Unified API, so connecting to the storage service meant only having to code their integration for Kloudless once. Second, Kloudless is embeddable, which would allow their users to easily authenticate with Egnyte through the Kloudless File Picker; an open-source UI tool created for allowing users to authenticate their cloud storage provider of choice. Taking away the pain of authentication from SignNow’s engineers when connecting end users to Egnyte would spare them valuable developer hours, saving them thousands of dollars. SignNow was able to quickly build out their connections to Egnyte using Kloudless’ Unified Storage API. This allowed them to move forward on their announcement of a partnership between the two services. By using Kloudless, SignNow was not only able to quickly meet their deadline for announcing Egnyte integration, but they were also able to avoid any future issues arising from Egnyte changing its own API; a typical API solution that Kloudless delivers on their side – taking the problem out of developer’s hands. With the Egnyte integration in place, SignNow successfully distanced themselves from a handful of competing services that lacked connections to the increasingly popular storage service. In Conclusion With the Egnyte integration now in place, SignNow could devote its resources back into its own purposes of providing industry-leading document signing and tracking functionality. The SignNow integration with Egnyte automates in-person signing for the Tutor Perini Corporation and makes documents that are ready to be signed available, without forcing personnel to race back and forth between their office and job sites. Users of the integration can track the status of e-signature workflows across various devices, keeping them protected with two-factor authentication, advanced encryption, and compliance support of the latest online security standards (SOC 2 Type II, GDPR and CFR Part 11). Once the signing process has completed, documents are automatically stored in a specified Egnyte Connect folder for easy access. SignNow’s partnership with Egnyte was made possible by Kloudless’ Unified API by providing a clear path for SignNow to achieve their goals without the need for future maintenance on their side. SignNow has become a darling of the construction industry software sector, whose construction management tools now have the ability to not only share and sign documents, but to track their progress across recipients as well. In addition, SignNow also has the option to connect with the Kloudless’ construction integrations to Bluebeam, PlanGrid, Procore, and Autodesk; 4 major applications in the construction tech-space. If at any point SignNow decides to pursue integrations with any one of the above applications, the capacity for doing so is already built-in to Kloudless’ abstraction layer. Because SignNow used Kloudless to solve their connection problems with Egnyte, they are now poised to take advantage of any other connectors that Kloudless offers with little to no development work whatsoever. In the future, if SignNow needs to connect to any of the storage, calendars, CRM, or other services that Kloudless provides, they will already have that ability built right into their codebase.
